The broken pocket watch also serves as a metaphor for Mustang's loss of faith in the military. It is revealed that Mustang's life is saved thanks to his Alchemical pocket watch taking the brunt of the impact. The only word that Heathcliff can muster is to ask Mustang, "Why?" Visually struck by these words, Mustang stands frozen as Heathcliff pulls out his firearm and shoots Mustang in the chest before Hughes shoots their former friend Heathcliff through the head. Having likely been expelled from the military following the purges of Ishvalans from Amestrian military service, Heathcliff is heartbroken to discover the carnage that Mustang has brought onto the very people he swore to protect. Mustang decides to investigate whether there are any survivors, and to everyone's dismay, there is: Heathcliff. The episode then abruptly shifts its tone 180 degrees with a five-year time skip to the Ishvalan War of Annihilation. The three share a hearty laugh as the sun begins to set. Hughes reveals that he doesn't have any such grand intentions he just wants to be able to find a woman to love and protect. Mustang exclaims his extremely naive intentions of dying in a ditch to become a cornerstone of his country, whereas Hughes fires back by saying that he would never die for anything in a ditch - he would survive eating just weeds if he had to. As the three are digging, Heathcliff reveals that the reason he joined the military was to change the way Amestrians see Ishvalans, revealing that he shares many of the same motivations that the character of Miles would later hold. Mustang, Hughes and the Ishvalan, who introduces himself as Heathcliff Erbe, are all punished for the outburst with the responsibility of digging a large hole near the track field for, like all monkey drills in the military, no particular reason. Mustang, relieved to find out that Hughes is also a morally just man, happily unites with Hughes in charging down the group of thugs and fighting them hand-to-hand. In a surprise twist of events, Hughes lets out a chuckle and points the gun at the group before screaming out his hatred for people who bully others. The bullies let the Ishvalan and Mustang walk to their dark fate while Mustang stares seriously and deeply at Hughes. Hughes explains to his friends that he is going to execute the two and asks them to keep quiet. When it seems like all hope is lost, Hughes appears, aiming a handgun at the group before shouting out to Mustang and the Ishvalan to come to him. He manages to sucker-punch the ringleader and fight off two of his cronies before being caught in a hold and outnumbered. Given Mustang's strong sense of moral justice, he naturally stands up for the Ishvalan and begins fighting his seniors. Arguably, the event that truly sets off their rivalry is when Hughes attempts to reach for a dish of spinach quiché, but Mustang quickly grabs the very dish before him while quoting, "Sorry, spinach quiché is my favorite." Following their second dining hall encounter, the two compete in nearly every training activity, from racing during their rucks to comparing who is the better sharpshooter.Īs Mustang is leaving the barracks, he notices the same Ishvalan he had met earlier being led to a dark alley. Given Hughes' brilliance, as demonstrated in his later work as an intelligence officer, he is quick to pick up on the difference in Mustang's behavior and decides to compete with him wholeheartedly. To the audience's surprise, the quick-handed glutton is revealed to be Hughes, who smugly states, "Sorry, spinach quiché is my favorite." Mustang is infuriated by this encounter and notes that Hughes hangs around with the same crowd who was harassing the previously mentioned Ishvalan cadet.įollowing this encounter, Mustang would compete with Hughes in every training activity as a rival, consistently trying to one-up him. As Mustang is attempting to reach for a dish in the dining hall, a man swipes the very same plate from him before he can react.
